COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Spanish Level 1 course is a continuation of the Spanish Foundation course. It is designed for students with some basic previous knowledge of Spanish. The students will be working with authentic Spanish materials in different formats, such as music, works of art, short readings and podcasts. The course will continue to develop the four skills necessary in the learning of any language: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Upon completion of this course, students will be required to take an oral and written exam.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will learn how to talk about vacation plans, hotels and activities to do on a trip. They will be able to identify body parts and describe the clothes they are wearing on different occasions. They will be able to talk about sports and sport equipment. At the end of the course, students will be able to recount and describe people, places and events.
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS
Every class lesson will differ, but at every meeting students will engage in the following activities:
- Complete a warm-up exercise that sets the stage for concepts introduced in the lessons.
- Reading task
- Listening task
- Writing task
- Speaking task
- Exit ticket to wrap up the class
Independent Work
Students should expect to participate in class in order to practice and develop their Spanish. Students will spend 60 minutes on independent work each week. It is crucial that students keep up with this work and come prepared for class each day.
Throughout the 2 weeks, students will work on different tasks in class. Students will also have different formative assessments as indicators of their progress in the course.
TEACHER FEEDBACK
Since students will complete most of their work in class, there will be many opportunities for the teacher to provide informal feedback. The teacher will conference with students regularly during the class period, providing oral feedback and some informal written notes on their work. Students will submit their final draft and receive detailed, written feedback from their teacher. By the end of the course, students will revise their work and self-critique their writing pieces.
ASSESSMENTS
Students will be required to take an oral and written assessment at the end of the course.
